Tom Jeffries, a PI in Broward County, Florida, is a man with a past—ex-Special Forces, ex-Dallas cop. But mostly, he's a man driven by a thirst for justice—his brand of justice.
When the teenage stepdaughter of Tom's best friend dies in the midst of a brutal gang rape, Tom vows to avenge her death.
Abby Archer, an up and coming Associate Attorney at Tom's firm, is assigned to assist him in any legal matters—an assistance he does not invite, and she does not welcome. They begin their relationship as adversaries, but things change . . .

THORNS ON ROSES Book 1 in Tom Jeffries Series Tom Jeffries Vigilante edition by Randy Rawls Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Tom Jefferies has done a lot of things over the years. He used to be a member of Special Forces and still maintains links to his old group. He used to be a Dallas cop. A cop with, according to some, a rather checkered history though nothing was ever proved. These days he is a private investigator in Broward County, Florida. That means he hands out a lot of business cards with his signature and the slogan--"If I can help, call me."

The young dead woman in the morgue was found with such a card between her fingers. No doubt a final indignity given by those who raped her and beat her to death. While the cops have his card, they don't have her identification or much of anything else. PI Tom Jefferies is in no rush to help them either as he has another way of getting justice.

Mary Lou Smithson was her name and she was in that often difficult time between a young teenager and womanhood. Found in Coral Lakes, the woman was the daughter of old friends Charlie and Lonnie Rogers. Seventeen and sure she knew what she was doing, she was hanging around with a punk boyfriend who sported a certain kind of tattoo. Her parents tried everything to stop her escalating dangerous behavior with no effect. Now, she is in the morgue dead and Tom Jefferies wants answers and justice. That tattoo is going to be a major piece of the puzzle.

What follows is a far more complicated story than your typical vigilante style book. Far different in style and tone from the Ace Atkins series, author Randy Rawls has created a much harder character who isn't bound by what law enforcement would consider permissible. While there are the occasional inside nods to readers familiar with his other series based in Texas, Tom Jefferies has very little in common with Ace Atkins.

He also has little time for outsiders no matter their intentions as he is on a mission for Mary Lou Smithson. A mission increasingly jeopardized by solid police work, a romantic entanglement, and other issues including the toll the quest is taking on this heavily conflicted character.

Published by L & L Dreamspell, this is the powerful start no doubt of a new series from Randy Rawls. Dark in tone with occasional flashes of humor and romance, the 264 page read takes readers on much more than a vengeance ride. Thorns On Roses is a good one and well worth your time.

THORNS ON ROSES Book 1 in Tom Jeffries Series Tom Jeffries Vigilante edition by Randy Rawls Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

While I have a soft spot for Ace Edwards, Tom's character is edgy and raw, though compassionate. I think this is Rawls' best book. It's gritty and suspenseful. A page turner, a must read.
This dark and gripping vigilante tale is a true page turner. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers.
This is the first Randy Rawls I have read. Mr. Rawls does a good job of keeping the reader engaged with the characters. I look forward to reading more of his writings.
A well written tale about interesting characters and murder, mahem, revenge and love set in south Florida. I prefer cozy mysteries, but i found this one difficult to put down. Mr Rawls writes a good story -- good enough to make me want more.
The Thorns on Roses gang raped the seventeen years old girl before dumping her dead in an abandoned vehicle. Jeffries vows to avenge her death. Using the Rose Tattoo that he saw on May Lou's corpse as the identification key, Jeffries hunts down the gangbangers one at a time; while Richards follows the bloody trail in which he believes the wise ass P.I. is an avenging angel of death. The law firm of Bernstein, Goldsmith, Espinosa and Bernstein that employs Jeffries fears his vendetta could harm the company so they assign associate Abbey Archer to keep him out of trouble. Ergo he makes one critical error when his attraction to Abbey provides his enemies with his Achilles Heel.

This is an exciting South Florida noir starring a kick butt hero on a mission in which he "unites" the gang and the cops in an effort to end his serial killing spree. The romance may appear at first as standard shtick, but Randy Rawls uses several great spins (especially a late one) to make the relationship relevant to the action-packed story line. With a nod to a composite of Charles Bronson characters from Death Wish and Mr. Majestyk, etc. fans will root for Jeffries as he kicks butt in this superb over the top of Coconut Grove thriller.

In Thorns on Roses, Randy Rawls takes the private investigator novel deep into thriller territory. The protagonist, Tom Jeffries, ex-Dallas cop and ex-Special Forces, brings extra bite to the traditional PI persona with his need for justice and his deadly talents.

When the daughter of his best friend dies during a gang rape, Jeffries vows to avenge the teenager. Using the girl's rose tattoo as his starting point, Jeffries tracks down the gang members. Then using the skills he honed in the Special Forces, he extracts vengeance. But Jeffries miscalculates and exposes himself to danger--not once but twice.

The first danger concerns a woman. Jeffries works for a local attorney who fears Jeffries' involvement in the case will give the firm a bad name. The attorney assigns Abby, a beautiful associate, to help Jeffries. Of course, Jeffries rejects Abby's offer to help, but he can't reject Abby. He plunges into a relationship that his cop and Special Forces experience hasn't prepared him for.

While both the gang members and the police focus their sights on him, Jeffries forges ahead. He'll need his sharp skills and a little help if he is to survive and keep his freedom.

Rawls takes the reader on a wild ride to a satisfying and surprising conclusion. I strongly recommend this can't-put-it-down novel.
