Joe Gillan's "For Her Sake" takes up a complex, multi-faceted struggle between "which is the truth faith in God" and some doubt about the existence of eternity itself via a conflict between a child's Christian parents and her spiritual father, a Jew.Sarah, the love child of college students Robert Larson and Loretta Gidreau, is reared by her mother and Jewish Donald Weinstein, unaware that his bride was pregnant with Larson's offspring. While mom remains mum, daughter Sarah naturally assumes Donald is her father and embraces his Jewish religion with a passion.
Twenty years later, Robert Larson contacts Loretta and learns that she is married to Donald Weinstein and has a daughter named Sarah. In long, lingering phone conversations with him, Loretta reveals to Robert that Sarah is actually his daughter. They also recount their long-ago affair and discover they "ache" for each other somewhere between nostalgic love and the passage of two decades.
Their encounter is encouraged by Robert's divorce some years past and Loretta's pending amicable divorce from her Jewish husband. In fact, books become the dominate theme in academic conversations that define a relationship far more platonic than the passionate liaison that conceived daughter Sarah. Indeed, in several discreet meetings at various hotels, they somehow bed together without ever becoming intimate, much to the astonishment and disappointment of this prurient reader. Indeed, they sleep on opposite sides of king-size beds.
Nonetheless, their conversations about Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Wolfe and other literary giants add a far reaching intellectual dimension to the struggle of competing religions and some doubt about the hereafter. These two Christians focus mostly, however, on Michener's "The Source" and the origin of the Jewish religion. While the literary and biblical references define broad universal moral issues, their struggle graphically illustrates the daily drama of down-to-earth human conflict.
If Robert never deviates from faith in God, he has pondered giving up Christianity to convert to the true religion, Judiasm. His friend, Paddy, rummages through the limbo of his faith in God and agnosticism, between religion of any brand and the prospect of no hereafter. When Paddy dies, Robert wonders whether his best friend is "up there" or "down below."
As their daughter prepares to leave for graduate religious studies in Israel, her Christian parents decide their future "for her sake." The jolting path they take and why they feel it's "sine qua non" we leave for you to discover in Joe Gillan's compelling new novel.

With the Publication of "For Her Sake (Sine Qua Non)" Joe Gillan" has produced another captivating novel and a worthy successor to "Just Before The Dawn, Rebecca Remembered", his first celebrated work of fiction. "For Her Sake..." conclusively demonstrates that Gillan is more than a one-trick pony and it is abundantly clear that at an age when most men are content to play golf, he has a bright literary future ahead of him. While deceptively slim, "For Her Sake..." is a showcase for Gillan's wide-ranging interests in subjects as varied as religion, sports, Thomas Wolfe, linguistics, paternity, maternity, friendship and romantic love. In its 153 pages "For Her Sake..." manages to encompass more aspects of the rich human tapestry than many works twice its length. But even more impressive is the fact that Gillan skilfully melds these disparate elements so seamlessly and with such grace, wit and erudition. The back cover of "For Her Sake..." modestly describes the work as "...the tale of two erstwhile lovers getting back together...while working through the difficulties of reconciling in their daughter's life two different religions..." But the reader will find that "For Her Sake..." transcends its subject matter by sensitively exploring the eternal verities that shape all of our lives. I unreservedly award "For Her Sake (Sine Qua Non)" five stars *****.
I bought For Her Sake to read later, but read a few pages to get the drift. I found the story compelling and kept reading to see where the story would go. It is an interesting tale, told with great insight into complex lives that are unusual to say the least. While not a literary scholar, I read the quotes and sidelights with a curiosity that surprised me. Any book that can go from George Jones to Mother Teresa to Thomas Wolfe has a wide range. And, you love to see what Paddy will come up with next.
Highly recommended. You will enjoy the book and learn some new insights. I only wish it could have explained the infield fly rule.

Like a movie that one sees over and over again without knowing why, or a melody played on the ivory keys of an old piano that runs and reruns in one's mind, For Her Sake stays with one long after the last word has been read. And that last word has been read reluctantly as you, the reader, are left begging for more.
In For Her Sake, the dialog reads like a prolonged conversation between Webster and Thesaurus, Bogie and Bacall, Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen (The Thomas Crown Affair), and Pope John Paul II and Maimonides. Gillian takes us on a stunning roller-coaster ride of sophistication, and tantalizing and challenging banter, rivaling any found in the heretofore "greats of literature". Part romance, part suspense, part ode to sibling love and love after death, part travelogue, part linguistic fidelity, with an overlay of Judaic-Catholic musings, this complex portrait of two lovers leaves one with all the answers. Still, questions remain.
What was known? When? Why did the characters act as they did? What would one do faced with the same situation? And more importantly, will Joseph Gillan write a sequel? One can only hope the answer to the last question is a robust "yes"!
